Fauquier County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 55,139 people and a population density of 33 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Warrenton .

Fauquier County is north-northeast of the geographic center of Virginia, about 35 km to the north and east of Maryland , and has an area of ​​1,687 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Loudoun County , Prince William County , Stafford County , Culpeper County , Rappahannock County , Warren County, and Clarke Counties .

history

It was formed in 1759 from parts of Prince William County. It was named after Francis Fauquier , a lieutenant governor of Virginia at the time.

According to the 2000 United States Census , Fauquier County had 55,139 people in 19,842 households and 15,139 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.39 percent white, 8.79 percent African American, 0.26 percent Native American, 0.59 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.60 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.33 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.02 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 61,999 , and the median income for a family is $ 69,507. Males had a median income of $ 45,484 versus $ 31,738 for females.
