Cumberland County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 9,017 people and a population density of 12 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Cumberland .

Cumberland County is near the geographic center of Virginia and covers an area of ​​776 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Goochland County , Powhatan County , Amelia County , Prince Edward County , Buckingham County, and Fluvanna County .

It was formed in 1749 from parts of Goochland County and Buckingham County. It was named after Wilhelm August, Duke of Cumberland , the third son of George II , King of England.

According to the 2000 census , Cumberland County had 9,017 people in 3,528 households and 2,487 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 60.37 percent white, 37.44 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.35 percent Asian and 0.59 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.06 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.66 percent of the population.
