Craig County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 5,091 people and a population density of 6 people per square kilometer. The county seat is New Castle . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Craig County is located in western Virginia, bordering West Virginia and covers an area of 856 square kilometers with no significant body of water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by Alleghany County , Botetourt County , Roanoke County , Montgomery County, and Giles County .

According to the 2000 United States Census , Craig County had 5,091 people in 2,060 households and 1,507 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.94 percent white, 0.20 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian and 0.14 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.35 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.33 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2060 households, 30.8 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 61.9 percent were married couples living together, 7.0 percent were single mothers, 26.8 percent were non-families, 23.9 percent were single households, and 10.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.88 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.6 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 103.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 101.5 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 37,314 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,750. Males had a median income of $ 26,713 versus $ 21,337 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,322. 6.6 percent of families and 10.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 15.9 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 10.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
