Bedford County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000 the county had 60,371 people and a population density of 31 people / km². The county seat is Bedford .

Bedford County is located just southwest of the geographic center of Virginia, about 60 km to the west and about 65 km to the south from North Carolina , and has an area of 1992 square kilometers, of which 38 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Amherst County , Campbell County , Pittsylvania County , Franklin County , Roanoke County , Botetourt County, and Rockbridge County .
history
It was formed in 1753 from parts of Albemarle County and Lunenburg Counties and named after John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford , a Foreign Secretary of Great Britain. Bedford County was formed into Campbell County in 1782 and Franklin County in 1786.

According to the 2000 census , Bedford County had 60,371 people in 23,838 households and 18,164 families. The population density was 31 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.18 percent white, 6.24 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.43 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.20 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.74 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.74 percent of the population.
Of the 23,838 households, 32.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 65.4 percent were married couples living together, 7.5 percent were single mothers, 23.8 percent were non-families, 20.2 percent were single households, and 7.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.89 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 99.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 97.5 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 43,136 , and the median income for a family is $ 49,303. Males had a median income of $ 35,117 versus $ 23,906 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,582. 5.2 percent of families and 7.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line. 8.3 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 10.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
