King William County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000, the county had 13,146 residents and a population density of 18 people per square kilometer. The county seat is King William . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

King William County is located in northeast Virginia and has an area of 740 square kilometers, of which 26 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: King and Queen Counties , New Kent Counties , Hanover Counties , and Caroline Counties .
history
It was formed in 1702 from parts of King and Queen Counties. It was named after Wilhelm III. , King of England , Scotland and Ireland . The District Courthouse, built in 1725, is the oldest courthouse in the United States that has been in continuous use.

According to the 2000 census , King William County had 13,146 people in 4,846 households and 3,784 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.81 percent white, 22.81 percent African American, 1.54 percent Native American, 0.37 percent Asian and 0.33 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.15 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.91 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,846 households, 36.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 63.9 percent were married couples living together, 10.2 percent were single mothers, 21.9 percent were non-families, 18.3 percent were single households and 7.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.06.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.1 percent of residents under the age of 18, 5.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.9 men.
The median income for a household in the 49,876 USD , and the median income for a family was 54,037 USD. Males had a median income of $ 34,616 versus $ 25,578 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,928. 4.4 percent of families and 5.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 6.0 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 9.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
