Lancaster County is located in eastern Virginia and has an area of ​​599 square kilometers, of which 254 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Middlesex County , Richmond County, and Northumberland County .

It was formed in 1651 from parts of Northumberland County and York County. The county is the birthplace of Mary Ball Washington , second wife of Augustine Washington and the mother of George Washington .

As of the 2000 census , Lancaster County had 11,567 people in 5,004 households and 3,412 families. The population density was 34 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 69.95 percent white, 28.88 percent African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.10 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.54 percent were descended from two or more races.
