Robert Edge Pine
Robert Edge Pine (* 1730 in London , † November 18, 1788 in Philadelphia ) was an English portrait and history painter .
Life
Robert Edge Pine was the son of John Pine, an engraver , and probably his student as well.
He painted portraits of , among others, King George II , the Duke of Northumberland and the actor David Garrick . These images are now in the National Portrait Gallery . He also painted a number of scenes from Shakespeare's plays, some of which were later exhibited at the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery , as well as historical compositions, including Lord Rodney Aboard the Formidable (now in Kingston Town Hall , Jamaica).
Pine traveled to America around 1784 and settled in Philadelphia, where he concentrated entirely on portraiture. His models included General Gates , Charles Carroll , Robert Morris , George Read , Thomas Stone , Mrs. Reid (now in the Metropolitan Museum, New York), and George Washington (1785). The portrait of Washington was engraved for Irving's Life of Washington , but the characterization is weak. One historically interesting painting is Congress Voting Independence , now in the Philadelphia Historical Society. It was started by Pine and finished by Edward Savage . After Pine died, many of his paintings were collected in the Columbian Museum in Boston .
