The county seat is Appomattox . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Appomattox County is located near the geographic center of Virginia and covers an area of 867 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Buckingham County , Prince Edward County , Charlotte County , Campbell County , Amherst County, and Nelson County .

It was formed in 1845 from parts of Buckingham County, Campbell County, Charlotte County and Prince Edward County. On April 9, 1865, here is the met Confederate -General Robert Edward Lee and the Union -General Ulysses S. Grant with their troops to surrender at Appomattox Court House .

The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over there were statistically 91.1 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,507 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,563. Males had a median income of $ 31,428 versus $ 21,367 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,086. 11.4 percent of the population and 8.7 percent of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 14.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 21.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
