Mathews County is located in the far east of Virginia, borders the Chesapeake Bay and has an area of ​​653 square kilometers, of which 431 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Gloucester County and Middlesex Counties .

history

It was formed in 1791 from parts of Gloucester County. It was named after Brigadier General Thomas Mathews and spokesman for delegates to the Virginia National Assembly. In 1776 the last royal governor, Lord Dunmore, left after being chased as far as Gwynn's Island by General Andrews Lewis and the Continental Army .
