Sussex County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000, the county had 12,504 residents and a population density of 10 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Sussex .

Sussex County is located in southeast Virginia, about 30 km south of North Carolina and has an area of 1,276 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Surry County , Southampton County , Greensville County , Dinwiddie County, and Prince George Counties .

According to the 2000 census , Sussex County had 12,504 people in 4,126 households and 2,809 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 36.39 percent white, 62.13 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.54 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.67 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.82 percent of the population.
Of the 4,126 households, 28.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 45.0 percent were married couples living together, 18.9 percent were single mothers, 31.9 percent were non-families, 28.2 percent were single households and 12.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.94.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 19.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 34.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 135.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 142.3 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,007 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,739. Males had a median income of $ 29,307 versus $ 22,001 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,670. 12.8 percent of families and 16.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 24.3 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 19.2 percent were people over 65 years of age.
