Stafford County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000 the county had 92,446 residents and a population density of 132 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Stafford .

Stafford County is located in northeast Virginia, borders Maryland to the east , separated by the Potomac River and has an area of 725 square kilometers, of which 25 square kilometers are water. The southern border is the Rappahannock River . It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Prince William County , Culpeper County , Spotsylvania County , Caroline County , King George County, and Fauquier County .
history
It was formed in 1664 from parts of Westmoreland County. The county was named after the English city of Staffordshire . George Washington spent his childhood here on the family estate of Ferry Farm on the Rappahannock River , not far from Fredericksburg.

According to the 2000 census , Stafford County had 92,446 people in 30,187 households and 24,481 families. The population density was 132 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 82.00 percent white, 12.13 percent African American, 0.45 percent Native American, 1.64 percent Asian, 0.10 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.21 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.47 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.62 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 30,187 households, 46.9 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 68.0 percent were married couples living together, 9.3 percent were single mothers, 18.9 percent were non-families, 13.8 percent were single households and 3.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 3.10 and the average family size was 3.32 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 31.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 33.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 5.9 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 101.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 99.5 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 66,809 , and the median income for a family is $ 71,575. Males had a median income of $ 47,080 versus $ 31,469 for females. The per capita income was $ 24,762. 2.4 percent of families and 3.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 3.3 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 5.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
