The Rappahannock is a river in the east of the US state Virginia in the United States of America .
The source of the Rappahannock rises in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Chester Gap in Rappahannock County . The river flows into Chesapeake Bay . It extends over a length of 296 kilometers. The Rappahannock has a drainage basin of 4,134 km², which is 3.7% of the area of Virginia. A right tributary is the Rapidan River , which flows about 16 km northwest of Fredericksburg .
history
The Rappahannock River is considered to be steeped in history in the USA. Not only was it the site of early Virginia settlements, it was also the site of battles during the American Civil War . Sometimes the river was seen as the border between the warring parties and control over the banks changed several times. The best-known clashes along the river were the Battle of Fredericksburg and the Battle of Rappahannock Station, both in 1862.

The settlement began around 1710 at the instigation of the governor Alexander Spotswood , who arranged for settlers from Switzerland and Rhineland-Palatinate to mine the iron ore deposits.

Surname
The name comes from the Algonquin language and is called lappihanne or toppehannock , which means something like "rapidly rising water" or "where the current comes and goes".
