The Blue Ridge Mountains are a mountain range in the eastern United States . You are part of the Appalachian Mountains . Mount Mitchell , which belongs to them, is at a height of 2037 m (6684 feet ) the highest mountain in the mountain range and also the highest point in North America east of the Mississippi .

The Blue Ridge Parkway runs across the Blue Ridge Mountains . Much of the parkway runs along the mountain ridges and was built during the Great Depression from 1935 as part of the New Deal by federal and state authorities with the assistance of the Works Progress Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps .

In John Denver's song Take Me Home, Country Roads (1971) are the Blue Ridge Mountains mentioned (although the song mainly to West Virginia applies, which is hardly touched by this mountain range). The television series The Waltons also takes place in this area .
