The hunting lodge Grünau is located about seven kilometers east of Neuburg an der Donau in the largest contiguous alluvial forest area in Central Europe.

history

The Wittelsbach Count Palatine Ottheinrich had the hunting lodge built for his wife Susanna von Bayern from 1530. First, the residential tower-like core building was built, which was later supplemented by various wings around a large courtyard. Inside the core building, the spatial structure from the time it was built has largely been preserved. The room functions of the dining room, two stately apartments, consisting of living room and bedroom and a common side room (studiolo, cabinet) as well as other rooms under the roof can still be clearly seen. The extensive wall paintings still preserved there were mostly started by Jörg Breu the Younger and added later.

Grünau was originally built as a moated castle, but the trenches have now silted up. Today the hunting lodge is owned by the Wittelsbach Compensation Fund .

Todays use

Cultural events, such as concerts, are held in the Grünau hunting lodge. Since 2005, garden days have been held here sometimes in May and a Christmas market in December.

As part of the major nature conservation project "Dynamization of the Danube floodplains between Neuburg and Ingolstadt", the Neuburg floodplain institute has been housed here since 2006. It has been part of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt since 2010 .

On April 19, 2008 the opening of the "Auenzentrum Neuburg" took place.
