Building description

Sandizell Castle was expanded as a three-wing complex in the Renaissance style around 1580 ; this consisted of the east and west wings as well as the south wing with a four-bay bridge to the entrance hall. As early as 1632, during the Thirty Years' War , the Swedes burned the complex down to the east wing, which is still preserved today.

From 1749 to 1755, Sandizell Castle was rebuilt according to plans by the Neuburg master builder Johann Puchtler and a two-storey castle chapel was integrated in the central south wing. The gate tower was built in 1763.

The palace park was laid out as an English landscape park in the 1870s . The park is not open to the public.

Hofmark Church

In 1735 Johann Baptist Gunetzrhainer began building the Hofmark Church and in 1756 the tower was followed by Leonhard Matthäus Giessl . The most important work is the altar by Egid Quirin Asam .

The church houses the grave monuments of the Counts von und zu Sandizell and is connected to the castle park by a passage. The former Hofmarkskirche is now used as the parish church of St. Peter by the residents of Sandizell. The renovation of the organ, galleries and cemetery wall will be completed on February 23, 2020.

World history in Sandizell

Sandizell Castle became historically significant when, on August 8, 1704, during the War of the Spanish Succession, the generals Eugen von Savoyen and Marlborough held a council of war for the battle of Höchstädt .

Todays use

Today, half of the palace is owned by Nikolaus Graf von and zu Sandizell with his brother Tassilo and Horst-Florian Jaeck, whose parents bought the eastern half of the palace complex with its park in 1970. The castle is inhabited by the owner families and partly rented out for events and weddings.
