At 2037 meters (6684 feet ), Mount Mitchell in the US state of North Carolina is the highest mountain in the Appalachians and namesake of the park of the same name. It is also the highest point east of the Mississippi in North America and is crossed by the Appalachian Trail .

The mountain is located in the Black Mountains , a mountain group of the Blue Ridge Mountains . The mountain was named after Elisha Mitchell , a professor at the University of North Carolina who determined the height of the mountain in 1835 .

Climbing Mount Mitchell is comparatively easy since a road ran through the national park. After a short hike through a forest of conifers you reach the summit. At the top of the mountain there is a viewing platform and Elisha Mitchell's tomb.

ecology

On the mountain, vegetation is exposed to high levels of pollution, including acid precipitation - rain, snow, and very low pH fog . These acids damage spruce and fir trees in particular , partly through natural metals in the soil, such as aluminum, which are released. The acidic precipitation also leaches important minerals from the soil. This influence also reduces the resistance of the trees and their immunity to insects such as the spruce lice (see aphids ).

While the mountain appears mostly lush and green in summer, many dead tree trunks can be discovered due to these serious problems. Repairing the damage is a difficult task as the pollutants are often carried hundreds of kilometers from great distances.
