Caroline County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 22,121 people and a population density of 16 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Bowling Green .

Caroline County is located in northeast Virginia, about 20 km from Maryland and has an area of ​​1,379 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: King George County , Essex County , King and Queen Counties , King William County , Hanover County , Spotsylvania County, and Stafford County .

history

It was formed in 1728 from parts of Essex County, King and Queen County, and King William County. It was named after Caroline von Ansbach , the wife of George II and thus Queen of Great Britain from 1727. During the Civil War in 1864 Union forces fought with the Confederates near Milford. General Thomas Jonathan Stonewall Jackson died in Guinea after he had been accidentally shot by his own troops at the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2nd and 5th, 1863. John Wilkes Booth , the assassin on President Abraham Lincoln , was allegedly shot and killed by US troops here. In 2011, the county declared Loving Day a public holiday .

According to the 2000 United States Census , Caroline County had 22,121 people in 8,021 households and 6,007 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 62.57 percent white, 34.37 percent African American, 0.78 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.52 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.37 percent were descended from two or more races.
