Loving Day

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Loving Day is the celebrations held annually in many cities across the United States on June 12 to mark the anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling on the Loving v. Virginia . With this in 1967 a law of the state of Virginia was repealed, by which so-called "multiracial" marriages between white and non-white partners were forbidden. The ruling of the Supreme Court in favor of the Loving couple marked the legal end of all skin color- based restrictions on marriage and is therefore a landmark decision and a milestone in the American civil rights movement .

The trial resulted in the conviction of Richard Loving and Mildred Loving under a law in Virginia since 1924 for their marriage in Washington, DC , because Richard Loving was white, while Mildred Loving was considered an African American .

Loving Day is now the largest multiracial celebration in the United States; several cities and Caroline County , Virginia, home of the Lovings, have made Loving Day an official holiday.
