Spotsylvania County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2010 , the county had 130,674 residents and a population density of 125.9 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Spotsylvania Courthouse .
geography
Spotsylvania County is located in northeastern Virginia and has an area of 1068 square kilometers, of which 30 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Stafford County , Caroline County , Hanover County , Louisa County , Orange County, and Culpeper Counties .
history
It was formed in 1721 from parts of Essex County, King and Queen County, and King William County. It was named after Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood . Many battles were fought in this county during the American Civil War , including the Battle of Fredericksburg from December 11-15, 1862, the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2-5, 1863, and the Battle of the Wilderness from December 5-6 , 1863 . May 1864 and the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House from May 8-21, 1864.

According to the 2000 census , Spotsylvania County had 90,395 people. 554 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 31,308 households and 24,639 families. The population density was 87 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 82.89 percent white, 12.45 percent African American, 0.32 percent Native American, 1.38 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 1.04 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.88 percent were from two or more races. 2.81 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 31,308 households, 42.4 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 64.8 percent were married couples living together, 9.9 percent were single mothers, 21.3 percent were non-families, 16.4 percent were single households and 5.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.87 and the average family size was 3.22.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 30.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 32.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 8.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 97.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 57,525 , and the median income for a family is $ 62,422. Males had a median income of $ 40,909 versus $ 27,910 for females. The per capita income was $ 22,536. 3.4 percent of families and 4.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. These included 6.2 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 4.8 percent of residents aged 65 years or over.
