Spotsylvania County is located in northeastern Virginia and has an area of ​​1068 square kilometers, of which 30 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Stafford County , Caroline County , Hanover County , Louisa County , Orange County, and Culpeper Counties .

history

It was formed in 1721 from parts of Essex County, King and Queen County, and King William County. It was named after Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood . Many battles were fought in this county during the American Civil War , including the Battle of Fredericksburg from December 11-15, 1862, the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2-5, 1863, and the Battle of the Wilderness from December 5-6 , 1863 .
