Frederick County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 59,209 people and a population density of 55 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Winchester .

Frederick County is located in the far north of Virginia, borders West Virginia to the north and west, and is divided into six administrative districts: Back Creek District, Gainesboro District, Opequon District, Red Bud District, Shawnee District, Stonewall District. The county has an area of 1076 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Clarke County , Warren County, and Shenandoah Counties .
history
It was formed in 1743 from parts of Orange County and Augusta County. It was named after Friedrich Ludwig von Hannover , the eldest son of George II , King of Great Britain and his wife Caroline von Ansbach . During the American Revolution, the district capital, Winchester, was the headquarters of George Washington . During the American Civil War , the county's affiliation shifted between the Confederate and the Union, depending on how the next battle was decided. As of the 2000 census , Frederick County had 59,209 people in 22,097 households and 16,727 families. The population density was 55 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.99 percent white, 2.62 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.66 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.56 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.01 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.70 percent of the population.
Of the 22,097 households, 36.6 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 62.5 percent were married couples living together, 8.8 percent were single mothers, 24.3 percent were non-families, 19.2 percent were single households and 6.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.02.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.4 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 10.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 100.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 96.7 men.
The median income for a household in the 46,941 USD , and the median income for a family was 52,281 USD. Males had a median income of $ 35,705 versus $ 25,046 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,080. 4.0 percent of families and 6.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. 7.3 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 6.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.
