Goochland County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 16,863 residents and a population density of 23 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Goochland .

Goochland County is located slightly northeast of the geographic center of Virginia and has an area of ​​751 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Louisa County , Hanover County , Henrico County , Chesterfield County , Powhatan County , Cumberland County, and Fluvanna County .

history

It was formed in 1727 from parts of Henrico County. It was named after William Gooch , a lieutenant governor of the county during colonial times.

The racial the population was composed of 72.71 percent white, 25.64 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.47 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.20 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.77 percent were descended from two or more races.
