Campbell County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 51,078 people and a population density of 39 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Rustburg . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Campbell County is located just southwest of the geographic center of Virginia, is about 50 km to the south of North Carolina and has an area of 1,314 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Appomattox County , Charlotte County , Halifax County , Pittsylvania County , Bedford County, and Amherst County .
history
Formed in 1782 from parts of Bedford County, it was named after General William Campbell , a hero of the Revolutionary War and best known for the Battle of Kings Mountain .

According to the 2000 United States Census , Campbell County had 51,078 people in 20,639 households and 14,694 families. The population density was 39 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 83.24 percent white, 14.71 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.62 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.33 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.90 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.83 percent of the population.
Of the 20,639 households, 30.8 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.0 percent were married couples living together, 11.4 percent were single mothers, 28.8 percent were non-families, 24.6 percent were single households and 8.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.3 men.
The median income for a household in the 37,280 USD , and the median income for a family was 42,901 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,108 versus $ 22,286 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,134. 7.9 percent of families and 10.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 14.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 10.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.
