history

Lynchburg was founded in 1757 by John Lynch, who set up a ferry service across the James River there when he was only 17 years old . In 1786, the town received its charter. John Lynch was also responsible for building Lynchburg's first bridge over the river in 1812. When it was completed, the ferry service was discontinued. The city grew into a trading and manufacturing center in the 19th century. The main branches of industry were the tobacco business and the iron and steel industry. With the Kanawha Canal and later four railway lines, important parts of Virginia's infrastructure ran through Lynchburg.

During the Civil War , Lynchburg served as a supply base for Confederate troops and, thanks to the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad, acted as an important shunting yard for units and supplies between the eastern and western theaters of war. In 1864, a Union army under General David Hunter approached within about a mile of the city, but this advance was repulsed by Confederate General Jubal Early on June 18, 1864, who took advantage of the railroad to get reinforcements from nearby Bring Cold Harbor. Near Lynchburg is Appomattox Court House , scene of the Battle of Appomattox and the surrender of the southern states in the Civil War.

Tanker accident of April 30, 2014
