Vaivara was a rural community in the eastern part of the north Estonian district of Ida-Viru .

It had an area of 397.97 km² and 1551 inhabitants (2010).

In addition to the main town Sinimäe the rural community from the villages stocks Arumäe , Auvere , Hiiemetsa , Hundinurga , Kudruküla , Laagna , Meriküla , Mustanina , Olgina , Peeterristi , Perjatsi , Pimestiku , Puhkova , Soldina , Sotke , Tõrvajõe , Udria , Vaivara and Vodava .
Second World War
In September 1943, the Nazi German occupying forces established the Vaivara concentration camp , through which around 20,000 Jewish prisoners passed.
In the course of the Second World War , the front ran for several months from July 1944 in the municipality, the so-called Blue Mountains (Sinimäed). It is estimated that over 170,000 people died during the fighting on the Narva Front in the summer of 1944. A memorial on the so-called Grenadierberg near Sinimäe commemorates them today .
