The Ida-Viru district (Estonian: Ida-Viru maakond or Ida-Virumaa ; German: Ost-Wierland ) is a district (maakond) in Estonia .
geography
Ida-Virumaa is located in the northeastern part of the country and borders on the Lääne-Viru districts in the west, Jõgeva in the south and forms the state border with Russia in the east . Two bodies of water also border this district: Lake Peipus in the south and the Gulf of Finland in the north.
history
In 2005 the city of Jõhvi was merged with the surrounding municipality of Jõhvi. In 2017, several municipalities were merged.
politics
According to a law of December 13, 1995, the governor is appointed in coordination with the local government on the proposal of the Prime Minister.

The governor leads the business of the district administration, represents the interests of the state and should ensure a balanced development of the district. He coordinates the cooperation of the regional branches of the ministries and other administrative authorities and the local government. He is also responsible for the distribution and use of state assets in the district, approves the planned budgets of the state authorities and monitors compliance with them.
Furthermore, he supervises the work of the municipalities of the district and represents the district in court.
The governor is accountable to the government of the Republic of Estonia for his activities.

Most of Estonia's industry is located in Ida-Virumaa. This area also has the largest slate deposits in the country.
