The former rural community Illuka ( Illuka vald ) was in Ida-Viru County in northeast Estonia . In 2017 it was merged with four other rural communities to form the rural community of Alutaguse .
description
The rural community had an area of 543.82 km². It had 1,065 inhabitants (2012). With only 1.96 inhabitants per square kilometer, the municipality was one of the most sparsely populated municipalities in Estonia.
The former Illuck manor house , which has been used as a school since 1921, was on the territory of the community .
Villages
In addition to the main town Illuka , the rural community included the villages of Agusalu , Edivere , Jaama , Kaatermu , Kaidma , Kamarna , Karoli , Kivinõmme , Konsu , Kuningaküla , Kuremäe , Kurtna , Ohakvere , Ongassaare , Permisküla , Puhatu , Rausvere and Vasavere .
Kuremäe Monastery
In the community is the Russian Orthodox nunnery of Kuremäe (German Kranichberg ), the only one in Estonia. The place is also known under the name Pugtitsa (German: Püchtitz ).
The monastery was built between 1892 and 1895 near a sacred spring. It is the destination of many Russian Orthodox pilgrims. 163 nuns live in it today. They mostly work in agriculture, but offer touristic tours.
The holy mountain of the pagan Estonians was once located on the site of today's nunnery (today a place of worship of the Estonian archaic folk beliefs ). The folk poetry also connects the source with dramatic stories about the Estonian legendary hero Kalevipoeg .
