Puhatu is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Alutaguse (until 2017 Illuka ). It is located in Ida-Viru County ( East Wierland ) in northeast Estonia .

One of the most extensive swamps in Estonia is located near Puhatu. The Puhatu sooala is over 40 kilometers long and 25 kilometers wide. The moor landscape, which is almost 600 square kilometers in size, extends to Lake Peipus . It has been a nature reserve since 1967.

There are numerous lakes in it. The largest of them is Puhatu Lake ( Puhatu järv ) with 20.9 hectares . Other lakes are Viinamardi järv (2 hectares), Korponi järv (0.6 hectares), Puhatu Martiska järv (6.3 hectares) and Pahasenja järv (2.1 hectares).
