Kurtna is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Alutaguse (until 2017 Illuka ). It is located in Ida-Viru County ( East Wierland ) in northeast Estonia .

The village has 205 inhabitants (as of 2011). It is located twelve kilometers from the city of Jõhvi by forty kilometers from Narva .

The place was first mentioned in 1241 in the Liber Census Daniæ . In 1480, in connection with the Vasknarva Order Castle, the Kurtna Order was mentioned for the first time. It later became a manor .

The manor house built in 1880 has been preserved. It was built in the style of historicism with strong neo-Gothic elements. Next to it is the steward's house from 1911 made of red stone.

Kurtna Lake District

Nature lovers especially know the lake area of ​​Kurtna ( Kurtna järvestik ). With its 42 lakes, it is the largest lake area in Estonia. The heavily forested area was declared a nature reserve in 1987 on an area of ​​2,557 hectares. The largest lake is Konsu järv with an area of ​​136 hectares.
