Ongassaare is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Alutaguse (until 2017 Illuka ). It is located in Ida-Viru County ( East Wierland ) in northeast Estonia .

Description and history

The village has 18 inhabitants (as of 2011).

The place has only had its current name since 1975. The village used to be called Kõnnu.

The most famous son of the place is the Estonian composer Alfred Karindi (1901–1969). A memorial plaque was unveiled on the house where he was born in 1986.

In the forest near Ongassaare there are two lakes popular with nature lovers and anglers, the Ümmargune järv (1.6 hectares) and the Pikkjärv (2.1 hectares). A small stream connects both lakes. At Pikkjärv is the source of the Alajõgi river , which flows into Lake Peipus .
