Pootsiku is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Alutaguse (until 2017 Iisaku ). It is located in Ida-Viru County ( East Wierland ) in northeast Estonia .

Description and history

The village has 18 inhabitants (as of October 16, 2010).

Pootsiku was first mentioned in a document in 1497. In the middle of the 19th century, the Pootsiku estate was formed from the local farms. In the 1920s the estate was dissolved and the land was redistributed among the farmers.

In Pootsiku, the old manor park has been preserved. A memorial stone has been there since 1979 in memory of the bacteriologist Karl Happich (1863–1923). Happich was born in Pootsiku into a family of tutors. He studied at the veterinary institute in Tartu, Livonia . From 1919 until his death he headed the Veterinary Institute at the University of Tartu . Among other things, Happich discovered the lactic acid bacterium Lactobacillus acidophilus, which is necessary for the production of sour milk products .
