Kauksi (German Kauks ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the Estonian district of Ida-Viru . It belongs to the rural community of Alutaguse (until 2017 Iisaku ). Kauksi had 59 inhabitants on January 1, 2006. It is located on the north bank of the largest Estonian body of water, Lake Peipus ( Peipsi järv ).
Description and history
Kauksi was first mentioned in a document in 1543. In 1732 the village was part of the Maidla Manor .
In the 18th century, the Russian nobleman Michailo Rudneff had a manor house built directly on Lake Peipus . The estate had its own port with a ferry connection to Tartu .
Kauksi is especially popular as a tourist destination in summer. A roughly 30 km long, barely interrupted sandy beach on the banks of Lake Peipus stretches from the village to Vasknarva . Sand dunes and pines growing behind them determine the landscape. The air and water temperatures are on average higher than on other Estonian bathing beaches. Several campsites, ball playgrounds, bicycle and hiking trails are available. In 1961 a tourist center with a nature park house was opened in Kauksi.
