Jõuga is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Alutaguse (until 2017 Iisaku ). It is located in Ida-Viru County ( East Wierland ) in northeast Estonia .

Description and history

The village has 53 inhabitants (as of October 16, 2010). It was first mentioned in a document in 1426. The name is of Wotic origin.

The place is particularly known for its numerous lakes in untouched nature. The four largest are the Pesujärv (two hectares) with its sandy banks, the Linajärv (1.1 hectares), the Liivjärv (2.2 hectares) and the Armise järv (4.4 hectares).

Cave cemetery

The largest cave cemetery in Estonia is located in the area of ​​the village. The 300 or so caves were used for the burial of their deceased from the 11th to the 15th centuries. There were speleologists also numerous art and jewelery.
