Väike-Pungerja is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Alutaguse (until 2017 Mäetaguse ). It is located in Ida-Viru County ( East Wierland ) in northeast Estonia .

Description and history

The village has 44 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011).

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1398. In the 17th century the manor was founded that then belonged to the Purtse manor . At the Väike-Pungerja brook ( Väike-Pungerja oja ), some of the estate's buildings have been preserved, such as the caretaker's house, a granary and the horse stable.

The largest oil shale mining area in Estonia is located three kilometers east of Väike-Pungerja . It bears the name "Estonia".

Post office

On the old postal route between Riga via Tartu and Jõhvi to Saint Petersburg , the post office of Väike-Pungerja was founded in the 17th century. In 1830/31 the wooden building was replaced by a single-storey stone building. The historic building is now a listed building. The station included a guest house, stables, a sauna and other buildings.
