Smolnitsa is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Alutaguse ( Alajõe until 2017 ). It is located in Ida-Viru County ( East Wierland ) in northeast Estonia .

Description and history

Today the village has only 5 inhabitants (as of 2011). It is located directly on the north bank of Lake Peipsi ( Peipsi järv ).

Around the village is the Smolnitsa Protected Landscape Area ( Smolnitsa maastikukaitseala ). It mainly serves to protect the sand dunes that stretch from Smolnitsa almost to Vasknarva .

In contrast to the other villages in the area, the village emerged late. It was first recorded on the maps of the German Baltic cartographer Ludwig August Mellin at the end of the 18th century .
