Kalevipoeg

Kivinõmme is closely associated with the Estonian legendary hero Kalevipoeg . Both legs cut off with his own sword, Kalevipoeg is said to have collapsed on his knees in pursuit of the enemies in Kivinõmme and was killed. His grave is said to be under a hill in Kivinõmme Forest. In fact, archaeologists have established a cave dating from the Middle Iron Age .

A memorial stone in the mixed forest marks the spot. The vernacular claims that there is also a large treasure of gold buried there.

The hero's legs, however, are buried under an oak tree in the garden of the Kuremäe monastery six kilometers away . Others claim that Kalevipoeg's grave is under the Toompea in the Estonian capital Tallinn .
