Remniku is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Alutaguse ( Alajõe until 2017 ). It is located in Ida-Viru County ( East Wierland ) in northeast Estonia .

Description and history

The village has 59 inhabitants (as of 2000). It is located on the north shore of Lake Peipsi ( Peipsi järv ), eight kilometers from the city of Jõhvi . The Remniku oja brook flows into Lake Peipus near the village.

Remniku was first mentioned in 1583. In 1732 only four families lived in the place. 150 years later the population had risen to eleven families.

From 1990 to 1994 there was a training center for the Estonian Border Guard ( Eesti Piirivalve ) in Remniku . Today the place is best known for its leisure center and its beaches on the lake shore.
