Alajõe (until 1923 Russian Олешница Oleschniza ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the Estonian district of Ida-Viru . Until 2017 it was the administrative center of the rural municipality of Alajõe . Since then the village has been part of the newly formed rural community of Alutaguse . Alajõe has 147 inhabitants (as of 2000). The population is predominantly Russian-speaking.

The village is located on both banks of the 29 km long Alajõgi River at its confluence with Lake Peipus .

history

Alajõe village was first mentioned in writing in 1583.

Environment and facilities

Around Alajõe there is an important recreational area with many dachas and facilities built as rest homes for the workers of the nearby mining and open-cast mining area. In the village there is the Russian Orthodox Church of the Nativity, shops and a library.
