Joseph Gabriel Fernandez (born September 16, 1925 in Maruthurkulangara, in the Taluk Karunagappalli, south of Kollam , Kerala , India) was diocesan bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of Quilon in Kerala from 1978 and has retired in 2001 .

Live and act

Joseph Gabriel Fernandez belongs to the Latin rite and was born in the Taluk Karunagappalli, south of Kollam. On March 19, 1949, he was ordained a priest and worked as a pastor in various places in the Quilon diocese.

On January 30, 1978 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed second native bishop of Quilon. He was ordained bishop on May 14, 1978 by his predecessor Jerome Fernandez (1901–1992); Co- consecrators were Joseph Kelanthara , Archbishop of Verapoly , and Antony Padiyara , Archbishop of Changanacherry ( Syro-Malabar Church ).

Joseph Fernandez tried to enliven the religious life in his diocese. He did not continue the strongly Indianizing inculturation efforts of his predecessor, but tried to consolidate church life on the traditional line.

He often traveled to Europe, where he often visited families and priests from his diocese so that they would not lose touch with their homeland.

Bishop Joseph was a pastoral bishop who worked much in silence without putting himself in the foreground; this also highlights the official website of the diocese as being particularly characteristic.

After he was able to lead the diocese into the third millennium according to his wishes , he retired on October 16, 2001 and retired from all public offices. On December 16, 2001, he personally consecrated his successor Stanley Roman , one of his longstanding collaborators in the diocesan clergy.
