Antony Padiyara

Antony Cardinal Padiyara ( Malayalam മാർ ആന്റണി പടിയറ Mār Ānṟaṇi Paṭiyaṟa ; born February 11, 1921 in Manimala , Kerala ; † March 23, 2000 in Kakkanad ) was a Roman Catholic Archbishop and Cardinal .

Padiyara received on 19 December 1945, the sacrament of holy orders and was on 3 July 1955 by Pope Pius XII. appointed Bishop of the Indian Diocese of Ootacamund . He was ordained episcopate on October 16, 1955 in Ootacam and the Bishop of Mysore René-Jean-Baptiste-Germain Feuga ; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Coimbatore , Francis Xavier Muthappa , and Matthew Kavukattu , Archbishop of Changanacherry of the Syro-Malabar Church .

From 1962 to 1965 he took part in the Second Vatican Council .

On June 14, 1970 Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the Archbishop of Changanachcherry; on April 23, 1985 he was appointed Archbishop of Ernakulam by John Paul II . In the consistory of June 28, 1988 he was created cardinal. As a cardinal priest he received the titular church of Santa Maria Regina Pacis a Monte Verde .

On December 16, 1992 he became Grand Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly and thus head of the Syro-Malabar Church. On November 11, 1996, he resigned from office for reasons of age.

He died on March 23, 2000 and was buried in St. Mary's Cathedral in Ernakulam .
