The diocese of Coimbatore ( lat. : Dioecesis Coimbaturensis ) is in India situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Coimbatore . It covers parts of the districts of Coimbatore , Erode , Tirupur , Tiruchirappalli and Palakkad in the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala . The cathedral of the diocese is St. Michael's Cathedral in Coimbatore.

history

The Pro-Vicariate Apostolic Coimbatore was established in 1845 from cessions of territory by the Vicariate Apostolic Madura and Coromandel Coast and the diocese of Madura . It was founded in 1850 by Pope Pius IX. raised as the Apostolic Vicariate of Coimbatore . On September 1, 1886, the Vicariate Apostolic Coimbatore was raised to the diocese. The diocese gave up on June 12, 1923 parts of its territory to establish the diocese of Calicut and on December 28, 2013 to establish the diocese of Sultanpet . The Diocese of Coimbatore is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore as a suffragan .
