population
According to the 2011 census, Coimbatore has 1,050,721 inhabitants. This makes Coimbatore the second largest city in Tamil Nadu after the capital Chennai and just before Madurai . In the Coimbatore agglomeration , which extends beyond the administrative city limits, live 2,151,466 people. As a result of increasing urbanization , Coimbatore, like all major Indian cities, is experiencing strong population growth. Because there is hardly any space for further growth in the already densely populated urban area, population growth is concentrated in the suburbs. The city of Coimbatore rose 14 percent. In the same period, the population of the agglomeration rose by 46 percent.
83 percent of the population of Coimbatores are Hindus , 9 percent Muslim and 8 percent Christian . As in the whole of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 76 percent of the population as their mother tongue. 14 percent speak Telugu , 5 percent Malayalam , 3 percent Kannada and 2 percent other languages.
