Erode ( Tamil : ஈரோடு Īrōṭu [ ˈiːɾoːɖɯ ]) is a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . It is the capital of the district of the same name . The city is located on the Kaveri , around 90 kilometers northeast of Coimbatore and 340 kilometers southwest of Chennai . Its population is around 157,000 (2011 census).

Until the 18th century, Erode was an insignificant settlement that only grew into a city with the conquest by Mysore under Hyder Ali and the construction of a fort. In the wars of Mysore against the Marathas and the British East India Company , the city was largely destroyed, but rebuilt as a garrison town after it was finally captured by the British in 1799. The Scottish geographer Francis Buchanan reported in November 1800 about a fort with a crew of 4,000 men and an associated 300-house settlement with 1,500 inhabitants. In 1807 the garrison was relocated. The abandoned fort existed until 1877 when it was torn down.

Today the city is characterized by the cotton industry and related industries such as dyeing and textile printing. In addition, the food industry (vegetable oils, rice, beverages), leather production and processing and small-scale metal processing are of certain importance.

83 percent of the population of Erode are Hindus , 12 percent Muslim and 4 percent Christian . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 90 percent of the population as their mother tongue. 5 percent speak Telugu , 2 percent Urdu and 1 percent each speak Malayalam , Hindi and Kannada .

Well-known personalities born in Erode are the mathematician S. Ramanujan (1887–1920) and the social reformer EV Ramasami alias Periyar (1879–1973).
