The district of Erode ( Tamil : ஈரோடு மாவட்டம் ) is a district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The administrative center is the eponymous city of Erode . The district of Erode has an area of ​​5,760 square kilometers and around 2.3 million inhabitants (2011 census).

The district of Erode is located in western Tamil Nadu on the border with the state of Karnataka . Historically, the area is part of the Kongu Nadu region . Neighboring districts are Salem and Namakkal in the east, Karur in the southeast, Tiruppur in the south, Coimbatore in the southwest, Nilgiris in the west (all belonging to Tamil Nadu) and in Karnataka Chamarajanagar in the north.

history

The early history of the Erode District is essentially the same as that of the Coimbatore District . In 1804 the area of ​​Erode came to British India and was incorporated into the province of Madras as part of the Coimbatore district. After Indian independence, the area came to the newly formed state of Madras (now Tamil Nadu) in 1956. Erode has existed as an independent district since 1979, when it was formed from the northeastern parts of the Coimbatore district. In 2009 the Tiruppur district was created from parts of the Coimbatore and Erode districts.
