The district of Erode ( Tamil : ஈரோடு மாவட்டம் ) is a district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The administrative center is the eponymous city of Erode . The district of Erode has an area of 5,760 square kilometers and around 2.3 million inhabitants (2011 census).
geography
The district of Erode is located in western Tamil Nadu on the border with the state of Karnataka . Historically, the area is part of the Kongu Nadu region . Neighboring districts are Salem and Namakkal in the east, Karur in the southeast, Tiruppur in the south, Coimbatore in the southwest, Nilgiris in the west (all belonging to Tamil Nadu) and in Karnataka Chamarajanagar in the north.
The area of the district of Erode is 5,760 square kilometers. The district area is mostly flat and slopes gently to the east to the valley of the river Kaveri . The Kaveri, the largest river in Tamil Nadu, forms the eastern border of the district. The main tributary of the Kaveri in the Erode district is the Bhavani . In the north, the terrain rises towards the Eastern Ghats , which form the natural border with Karnataka. In the west, the district area extends to the foot of the Nilgiri Mountains .
A hot, semi-arid climate prevails in the Erode district . The annual mean temperature in Erode is 28.3 ° C, the annual mean precipitation is 700 mm. Due to its location in inland Tamil Nadu, the district of Erode receives relatively little rainfall during the northeast monsoon ; at the same time, the Western Ghats scold him against the southwest monsoon. history
The early history of the Erode District is essentially the same as that of the Coimbatore District . In 1804 the area of Erode came to British India and was incorporated into the province of Madras as part of the Coimbatore district. After Indian independence, the area came to the newly formed state of Madras (now Tamil Nadu) in 1956. Erode has existed as an independent district since 1979, when it was formed from the northeastern parts of the Coimbatore district. In 2009 the Tiruppur district was created from parts of the Coimbatore and Erode districts.

According to the 2011 Indian census, the Erode district has 2,251,744 inhabitants. The population density of 391 people per square kilometer is below the state average (555 people per square kilometer). 51 percent of the residents of the district of Erode live in cities. The degree of urbanization thus corresponds to the mean value in Tamil Nadu (48 percent). At 73 percent, the literacy rate is well below the Tamil Nadu average (80 percent).
The vast majority of residents of Erode District are Hindus . According to the 2011 census, 93.9 percent of the population of the Erode district are Hindus . Muslims (3.4 percent) and Christians (2.5 percent) make up only small minorities.
As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language in the district of Erode is Tamil . According to the 2001 census, it is spoken by 82.6 percent of the district's residents as their first language. There is also a larger minority of Telugu speakers (10.7 percent). Kannada , the language of the neighboring state of Karnataka, is spoken by 5.2 percent of the district's population.
According to the 2011 census, 16.4 percent of the district's residents are scheduled castes and 1.0 percent are scheduled tribes .
