The Krishnagiri district ( Tamil : கிருஷ்ணகிரி மாவட்டம் ) is a district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The administrative center is the eponymous city of Krishnagiri , the largest city is Hosur . The Krishnagiri district has an area of ​​5,192 square kilometers and around 1.9 million inhabitants (2011 census).

The district of Krishnagiri is located in the northern interior of Tamil Nadu on the border with the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh . Neighboring districts are Vellore in the east, Tiruvannamalai in the southeast and Dharmapuri in the south (all Tamil Nadu), Chamarajanagar in the southwest, Ramanagara in the west, Bengaluru Urban in the northwest, Bangalore Rural and Kolar in the north (all Karnataka) and Chittoor (Andhra Pradesh) in the northeast .

Historical view of Fort Krishnagiri

Fort Krishnagiri, located on the mountain of the same name, was built under the rule of the Vijayanagar king Krishnadevaraya (1509-29). During the Anglo-Mysore Wars it resisted two British conquest attempts, at the end of the Third Mysore War had Tipu Sultan but the area of Krishnagiri in British India to cede. The British incorporated the area as part of the Salem district in the Madras province . After Indian independence, the area became part of the newly formed state of Madras (now Tamil Nadu) in 1956.
