Krishnagiri ( Tamil : கிருஷ்ணகிரி Kiruṣṇakiri [ ˈkiɾɯʂɳəɡiɾi ]) is a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . It is located in the northern interior of Tamil Nadu near the triangle between the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh . The next largest city is Bangalore 90 kilometers northwest. The population is around 71,000 (2011 census). Krishnagiri is the administrative seat of the Krishnagiri District .
The name Krishnagiri means "Mountain Krishnas" and is derived from Mount Krishna Devaraya Hill , at the foot of which the city lies. The name of the mountain refers to the Vijayanagar King Krishnadevaraya (1509–29), during whose reign the fortress on the top of the mountain is said to have been built. Thanks to its natural protective position, the fortress withstood two British attempts at conquest during the Mysore Wars , in 1767 and 1791 . A few kilometers west of Krishnagiri flows the Ponnaiyar River , which is dammed here by the Krishnagiri dam . The NH 7 runs through the city and is India's longest highway connecting Varanasi with Kanyakumari .
71 percent of Krishnagiri's residents are Hindus , 25 percent are Muslims and 4 percent are Christians . The main language, as in all of Tamil Nadu, is Tamil, which is spoken by 78 percent of the population as their mother tongue. 20 percent speak Urdu , 17 percent Telugu and 3 percent Kannada .
