The district of Bengaluru Urban ( Kannada : ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ನಗರ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ "Bangalore City"; also: District of Bangalore ; formerly Bangalore Urban ) is a district of the Indian state of Karnataka . It includes Bangalore (newer official name Bengaluru), the capital of Karnataka and the third largest city of India, including the surrounding area.
geography
The Bengaluru Urban district is located in the southeast of Karnataka on the border with the state of Tamil Nadu . Neighboring districts are Ramanagara in the west, Bengaluru Rural in the north and east (both belong to the state of Karnataka), and Krishnagiri (state of Tamil Nadu) in the south.
The Bengaluru Urban District has an area of 2,190 square kilometers. In terms of area, it is the smallest district in Karnataka. The area is largely urbanized and includes the agglomeration of Bengaluru, old: Bangalore, and some surrounding areas. The Bengaluru Urban district is divided into the five taluks Bengaluru North, Bengaluru North (Addl.), Bengaluru East, Bengaluru South and Anekal.
history
The district of Bangalore Urban goes back to the district of Bangalore. This was one of the districts of the princely state of Mysore during the British colonial times . After India became independent, Mysore joined the Indian Union in 1949. In 1956, the district came to Bangalore to the language barriers of Kannada created new state of Mysore (1973 renamed Karnataka ), whose capital was now Bangalore. The district of Bangalore Urban has existed in its present form since 1986, when the former district of Bangalore was divided into the districts of Bangalore Urban and Bangalore Rural . The latter also included the current Ramanagara district until 2007 .
population
According to the 2011 census, the Bangalore Urban district has 9,588,910 inhabitants. The population density is 4,378 inhabitants per square kilometer, the proportion of the urban population is 90.9 percent. This makes Bangalore Urban by far the most populous, most densely populated and most urbanized district of Karnataka. Due to the strong economic upswing of the "boom town" Bangalore, the district is experiencing rapid population growth: Between 2001 and 2011, the population of the Bangalore Urban district grew by 46.7 percent, while the growth rate for the whole of Karnataka was 15.7 percent in the same period . The literacy rate in the Bangalore Urban district is 88.5 percent, the second highest of all Karnataka districts and is well above the state average (76.1 percent).
According to the 2001 census, Hindus make up the majority of the residents of the Bangalore Urban district with 79.4 percent. There are also significant minorities of Muslims (13.4 percent), Christians (5.8 percent) and Jainas (1.1 percent).
