The district of Yadgir ( Kannada : ಯಾದಗಿರಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ ) is a district of the Indian state of Karnataka . The administrative seat is the eponymous city of Yadgir .

geography

The district of Yadgir is located in the northeast of Karnataka on the border with the neighboring state of Telangana . Neighboring districts are Raichur in the south, Bijapur in the west and Gulbarga in the north (all Karnataka) and Telangana Mahbubnagar in the east.

The district has an area of 5,234 square kilometers. The area belongs to the highlands of Dekkan and has an average altitude of 350 to 450 meters above sea level. To the north of the district capital of the same name, a chain of hills runs through the district area. Two large rivers flow through the district of Yadgir: In the south, the Krishna , one of the most important rivers of the Deccan, forms the border with the district of Raichur. The Bhima , its most important tributary, flows north-south through the district and finally flows into the Krishna.

The district of Yadgir is divided into the three taluks Shorapur, Shahpur and Yadgir.

history

The history of the district is largely identical to that of the Gulbarga district , to which the area belonged until 2010. On April 10, 2010, the new Yadgir District was formed from the southern part of the Gulbarga District.

population

According to the 2011 Indian census, the Yadgir district has 1,172,985 inhabitants. The population development is clearly increasing: Between 2001 and 2011 the population grew by 22.7 percent. The growth rate is well above the average of Karnataka (15.7 percent) and is the third highest of all the districts of Karnataka. The population density is 224 inhabitants per square kilometer, but well below the state average (319 inhabitants per square kilometer). The Yadgir district is clearly rural: only 18.8 of the inhabitants live in cities. The urbanization rate is therefore less than half as high as the mean value in Karnataka (38.6 percent). The level of education is also very low: only 52.4 percent of the district's residents can read and write. The literacy rate is by far the lowest of all Karnataka districts and is well below the state average (75.6 percent).
