The district of Ramanagara ( Kannada : ರಾಮನಗರ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ ; also: Ramanagaram, Ramanagar ) is a district of the Indian state of Karnataka . The administrative center is the eponymous city of Ramanagara .
geography
The Ramanagara district is located in the southeast of Karnataka, southwest of the capital Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore ). Neighboring districts are Chamarajanagar in the south, Mandya in the west, Tumkur in the northwest, Bengaluru Rural and Bengaluru Urban in the northeast and Krishnagiri in the east. The latter already belongs to the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu .
The area of the Ramanagara district is 3,573 square kilometers. This makes it one of the smallest districts in Karnataka. The district area belongs to the southernmost part of the Dekkan Plateau and consists of a plateau with an average height of 600 to 900 meters above sea level. The landscape is criss-crossed by individual granite rocks. Ramanagara's spectacular rock formations served as a location for numerous films such as the Hindi classic Sholay or the film adaptation of A Passage to India . In contrast to the neighboring district of Bangalore Urban, which is largely urbanized due to the strong growth of Bangalore, the Ramanagara district is characterized by rural areas.
The Ramanagara district is divided into the four talukes Ramanagara, Channapatna, Kanakapura and Magadi.
history
The Ramanagara District was originally part of the Bangalore District. This was one of the districts of the princely state of Mysore during the British colonial times . After India became independent, Mysore joined the Indian Union in 1949. In 1956, the Bangalore district became part of the new state of Mysore created after the language borders of the Kannada (renamed Karnataka in 1973 ). In 1986, the former Bangalore District was divided into the Bangalore Urban (now Bengaluru Urban ) and Bangalore Rural districts. In 2007, the southwestern part of the Bangalore Rural district split off as an independent Ramanagara district.
population
According to the 2011 census, the Ramanagara district has 1,082,739 inhabitants. The population density is 303 people per square kilometer, slightly below the state average (319 people per square kilometer). 24.7 percent of the population of the Ramanagara district live in cities. The degree of urbanization is thus below the mean value in Karnataka (38.6 percent). While the Bangalore metropolitan area is experiencing significant population growth, the growth rate in the more rural Ramanagara district of 5.1 percent between 2001 and 2011 is lower than the average in Karnataka (15.7 percent). At 69.2 percent, the literacy rate is well below the state average (75.6 percent).
