geography

Lake Bellandur in the Bengaluru Rural District

The district of Bengaluru Rural is located in the southeast of Karnataka and comprises an area north and east of Bangalore (Bengaluru), the capital of Karnataka and the third largest city of India. Neighboring districts are Bengaluru Urban in the south, Ramanagara in the southwest, Tumkur in the west, Chikballapur in the northeast, Kolar in the east and Krishnagiri in the south. The latter already belongs to the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu .

The area of the Bengaluru Rural District is 2,239 square kilometers. This makes it the second smallest district of Karnataka after Bengaluru Urban. The district area belongs to the southernmost part of the Dekkan Plateau and consists of a plateau with an average height of 600 to 900 meters above sea level. In contrast to the neighboring district of Bengaluru Urban, which is largely urbanized due to the strong growth of Bangalore (Bengaluru), the district of Bengaluru Rural has a rural character.

The Bengaluru Rural District is divided into the four taluks Devanahalli, Dodballapur, Hoskote and Nelamangala.

history

The Bengaluru Urban District goes back to the Bangalore District. This was one of the districts of the princely state of Mysore during the British colonial times . After India became independent, Mysore joined the Indian Union in 1949. In 1956, the district came to Bangalore to the language barriers of Kannada created new state of Mysore (1973 renamed Karnataka ), whose capital was now Bangalore. The Bangalore Rural District was created in 1986 when the former Bangalore District was divided into the Bangalore Urban (now Bengaluru Urban ) and Bangalore Rural districts. Originally, Bangalore Rural comprised an area that almost completely enclosed the Bangalore Urban district. In 2007, however, the southwestern part of the district split off as an independent district of Ramanagara .

population

According to the 2011 census, the Bengaluru Rural district has 987,257 inhabitants. The population is the second lowest of all the districts of Karnataka, but the population density is 441 inhabitants per square kilometer, but above the state average (319 inhabitants per square kilometer). The district is clearly rural: only 27.1 percent of the population lives in cities. The degree of urbanization is thus lower than the mean value in Karnataka (38.6 percent). While the Bangalore metropolitan area is experiencing significant population growth, the growth rate in the more rural Bengaluru Urban district of 16.0 percent between 2001 and 2011 is hardly higher than the state average (15.7 percent). At 78.3 percent, the literacy rate is slightly higher than the mean for the state (75.6 percent) and India as a whole (74.0 percent).

According to the 2001 census, Hindus made up a large majority of 90.0 percent of the inhabitants of the old Bangalore Rural district (including the Ramanagara district) . For Islam , a minority known of 9.1 percent.
