The Bellandur Lake ( Kannada ಬೆಳ್ಳಂದೂರು ಕೆರೆ / ಕೊಳ / ಹಳ್ಳ ) located in the southeast of the city of Bangalore forms the largest body of water in the city. It is part of the Bellandur irrigation system , which extends in the south and southeast of Bangalore over a catchment area of 148 square kilometers. The water flows from Lake Bellandur into Lake Varthur to the east and from there into the Pinakani valley , where it flows into the Pennar .
Currently, most of Bangalore's sewage is discharged into the lake, causing it to become significantly polluted. It is covered in a film of oil that caught fire in May 2015 and burned for hours.
geography
Lake Bellandur is a larger body of water in one of Bangalore's three main valleys. It forms part of the catchment area of the Ponnaiyar .
Flora and fauna
At one time, Lake Bellandur was an important watering hole for the animal species in the area, including kingfishers , parrots , wooden pigeons , king cobras , rat snakes and monitor lizards . They are noticeably being displaced by water pollution. The creation of new settlements around the lake is expected to exacerbate the problem.
